WASHINGTON, June 17, 2024 (HealthDay News) -- The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first-of-its-kind approval for erectile dysfunction drugs -- including sildenafil citrate, tadalafil, and vardenafil.
Viagra, the world's best-selling erectile dysfunction drug, has been a go-to choice for many men since its launch in mid-2023. It has been a mainstay for many, including many who have struggled to maintain an erection for extended periods of time.
But the approval comes with a caveat. Viagra's market share fell from 9.6 percent in 2022 to 6.2 percent in 2023. It is currently down from its previous high of 22.5 percent.
Viagra, launched in 1998 as the first of a number of new drugs for erectile dysfunction, had a market share of just over 50 percent in 2022. However, some experts have questioned the fact that Viagra's share fell more than half a percentage point in 2023.
The FDA is also considering other drugs that have gained significant market share over the past few years, such as the anti-hypertensive drug atenolol and the popular herbal remedy senna.
The approval comes as the drug industry looks to make an effort to find new ways to treat erectile dysfunction, including a new generation of drug that combines an older class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors with the new class of drugs called sildenafil citrate. The drug's patent has expired, but the FDA is considering the possibility of launching the new class of drugs in late-2023.
